The source estimated, based on the dollar figures mentioned during negotiations, the final price would have been close to $60,000.
A complication had been that Kylee appeared to have different people representing her at different times.
"I don't know if the advice she has been getting is the best," said the source, who did not want to be named.
Kylee was quoted in a New Zealand Herald article last Monday and the magazine insider said that should have reduced her "exclusive" value significantly.
Sensible Sentencing Trust's Garth McVicar confirmed Kylee had been negotiating magazine and book deals for a while.
"I'm aware there are negotiations going on, they have for some time between various magazines and there is a book deal around but that is confidential stuff," McVicar said.
Meanwhile, the man who was cleared of her husband's murder, but convicted of arson and intentional damage charges, could go before the parole board before Christmas.
Ewen Macdonald was jailed for five years on Thursday for killing 19 calves with a hammer blow to the head and emptying thousands of dollars of milk from vats belonging to neighbour Graeme Sexton.
Feilding farmer Craig Hocken, who had a stag stolen by Macdonald, told the Herald on Sunday he was angry to think that Macdonald could soon be out.
"Five years should be five years," he said.
"He's cost a lot of people a lot of money, not to mention a lot of stress on families. He's obviously a sick chap and he needs some help."
Kylee's sister Chanelle Bullock said the family did not want to comment.
