Salute Greytown ended Kuranui College's unbeaten run when they came from behind to win their Netball Wairarapa premier one match played at the Genesis Recreation Centre in Masterton on Monday night by just the solitary goal, 45 to 44.
Greytown's chances of success didn't look bright when they trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, 27-19 at halftime and 37-31 at the end of the third quarter but they scored 14 goals in the fourth and final quarter to Kuranui's seven to snatch the victory.
Coach Tanya Dednam-McLeigh said Greytown had experienced some problems through the first three quarters in moving the ball through the court but they had come right when it mattered most. "Mentally we stayed strong and that's what counted in the end," she said.
Shooters Jess Cosgrove and Lorraine Maloney both finished with impressive stats for Greytown while if Rachel Pickering didn't have the same success rate in the goal attack position the accuracy of her service to Cosgrove and Maloney made their job easier. Leading the way on defence were Dawn Bregman , Kim Te Whare and Teresa Rzoska and midcourters Sue Button and Natasha Robinson were always busy.
An inspirational defensive performance by goal keep Kate Jurlina helped steer Gladstone All Blacks to a 46-33 win over Carterton Red in the other premier one match played at the Genesis Recreation Centre on Monday night. She picked up a number of telling interceptions and tips.
Also impressing on defence for Gladstone All Blacks was promising youngster Rachel Devenney while shooters Danielle Gray and Karen Bracewell were good value at the other end of the court.
Coach Sandra McNab was pleased with her team's win but said injury problems continued to make life difficult for them as far as developing combinations was concerned. "It would be nice to have a settled side, hopefully we are starting to move in that direction," she said.
