Kuranui College are through to the final of the Wellington secondary schoolboys third division rugby competition.
They clinched their place in the decider with a hard-fought 24-17 semi-final win over Taita College at Kuranui on Saturday.
Coach Aaron Everett said the match was every bit as competitive as expected with Kuranui having their noses in front most of the way and Taita always close enough on the scoreboard to keep matters interesting.
"We knew it wouldn't be easy and it wasn't," Everett said
"I would say we deserved the win but you have to give Taita credit for the way they played. They gave us plenty at times and we were struggling to keep them out".
Everett was especially pleased with the tenaciousness of the Kuranui defence with several strong Taita attacks close to the goalline being kept at bay.
"If anything you would have to say it was our defence which won us the game," he said.
"We were just a bit stronger in that department than they were."
Outstanding for Kuranui was captain and second-five Tapaga Isaac who made several breaks on attack and who was also one of his side's surest defenders.
Halfback Michael Hollis was his usual lively self, often harassing his opposite number into mistakes, while Sean O'Connor and Thomas Kershaw were the stars in a pack which had a clear edge in the lineouts and held their own in all other areas of the forward game.
The third division final will be played at Rongotai College next Saturday with Wellington College likely to be the other finalist.
