A Kumeu cafe has been gutted by a fire which took hold overnight.

The fire took hold around 9.30pm at the Route 16 Cafe, on State Highway 16, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.

"It was well involved with fire when fire crews first arrived."

The fire damaged around a quarter of the 10 by 20 metre cafe, Mr Phillips said.

"There's still a crew there now remaining at the scene and there's New Zealand Fire Service specialist fire investigators on route now.

"They attended last night and they're returning this morning."

Six crews attended at the height of the blaze, he said.

Fire crews were also currently attending a house fire on Riverside Drive in Point Wells, Mr Phillips said.

"We got called just before 6am."

Smoke was seen coming from the roof cavity of the property and four crews were currently at the scene, he said.
