Bridge strengthening gets underway tonight on a Waikato highway.
Kopu Bridge near Thames on State Highway 25, will be closed from 8pm tonight until 5.30am tomorrow.
It's to allow the New Zealand Transport Agency to carry out a permanent repair to the steel plate between the swing-span section of the bridge, and the bridge deck.
Motorists travelling to and from Auckland will be diverted onto State Highways 2 and 26, while Hamilton motorists will need to use Paeroa Tahuna Road or State Highway 26.
The NZTA suggests either delay journeys, or adding an extra 30 to 40 minutes on the alternative route.
