KEY POINTS:
A knife-weilding woman in Titahi Bay, north of Wellington, has surrendered to police after almost three hours of negotiations.
The police negotiation team was called to an address, 4km north of Porirua, around 2.30am after a 41-year-old woman wielding a knife was found locked inside her home.
Sergeant Bruce Mackay said police were called to the address after a number of 111 calls.
Mr Mackay said police made the decision not to enter the home and negotiations to take her into custody were made from outside the premises.
A dog handler and members of the police negotiation team were also called.
"After some 2.5 hours of talking with the occupant she eventually surrendered to police without any further incident just before 5am this morning," he said.
No one was injured during the stand-off and no other people were involved, he said.
The woman was being interviewed by Porirua Police this morning but it was not yet known what charges would be laid.
Mr Mackay said the situation was extremely volatile.
"Staff exercised a good deal of restraint and patience over a prolonged period and as a result were able to avert any undesirable confrontation," he said.
