A 19-year-old Masterton man pleaded guilty to two assault charges, one involving a weapon, and a breach of supervision charge when he appeared in the Masterton District Court.
The charges in the court last week related to an incident that took place on March 28, during which Justin Micheal Cork assaulted a man with a knife.
Defence lawyer Frank Minehan asked Judge Bill Hastings to consider remanding Cork to a restorative-justice court.
Mr Minehan said Cork was "totally drunk during that horrible incident".
"I submit that he lacks total insight into the effect he had on the victim, who is extremely disabled. I submit that restorative justice would allow him to work through that with the victim and apologise in the appropriate way," Mr Minehan said.
