Knife attack accused appears in court

A man accused of a knife attack on three men which ended only when he was knocked out by one of his victims made a brief appearance in court today.

Police said 41-year-old David Barlow dropped off a mate at a Christchurch asphalt company last Saturday when he saw a worker who owed him money.

He allegedly went at him with a knife, turning his attention to other workers when they came to their mate's aid.

One of the employees at Hornby firm JCL Asphalt then managed to knock the man out - an action which drew praise from police.

Today Barlow appeared at Christchurch District Court for the second time this week.

He has entered no pleas to the three charges of assault using a knife as a weapon.

Barlow, who also faces a cannabis possession charge, was remanded in custody to August 3 by Judge Paul Kellar.

JCL Asphalt have declined to comment on the incident but confirmed Barlow had never been an employee.
