KEY POINTS:
Surface flooding at Paekakariki is causing long delays for motorists north of Wellington.
The southbound lane of the road through Paekakariki is underwater, with motorists reporting it is close to the bottom of their car doors in some places. Traffic has come to a halt.
Police are urging motorists to delay non-essential travel, consider catching a bus or train or watch their following distances if they must drive.
The nasty weather is only set to get worse in the region.
MetService is warning of sustained rain and thunderstorms from Paraparaumu south to Wellington for the remainder of the day.
Already more than 14 millimetres of rain has fallen around Wellington City. The storms are expected to continue through tomorrow, which will be accompanied by colder temperatures and southerly gales.
The torrential rain is causing water problems of a different sort in the Horowhenua town of Levin, where residents are being warned to boil all their drinking water until further notice.
The heavy rain is hindering the performance of the local water treatment plant. As a result supplies are coming from reserve water, and the Horowhenua District Council says there is a small risk that new water entering the supply could be contaminated.
