Kiwis turn to Google: Will Winston Peters go with Labour or National?

When the world needs answers, it turns to Google. Post-election, it turns out this trend is no different.

Google search interest in "who will Winston Peters go with" has soared almost 3500 per cent over the past week, since the election.

Search interest peaked in popularity at midnight on Sunday as it emerged the New Zealand First leader would again play the kingmaker role in choosing the next Prime Minister.

Peters has continued to generate interest since the election, about three times as much as major party leaders, Bill English and Jacinda Ardern.

Other popular search terms include, "did Winston win", "mmp nz" and "maverick", the nickname Prime Minister Bill English gave Peters in reference to the role he has played in New Zealand politics.

Search interest in Peters was highest in Wellington and Northland, where Peters lost to National's Matt King on Saturday.
