KEY POINTS:
Wellington police dropped the sexual assault investigation involving members of the Kiwis league team after the players involved identified themselves and gave their account of the incident.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell of the Wellington CIB said minor inquiries were to be completed but police would not be pursuing any criminal action against anyone.
"Police have conducted a range of inquiries including interviews with the young woman. We are satisfied that some consensual sexual activity took place. The young woman does not wish to pursue the matter further due to her own personal circumstances." Police were unable to determine criminal culpability without the assistance of the woman.
The behaviour that followed the 58-0 loss to Australia continues to put a dampener on the Kiwis' tour of England, with unspecified disciplinary action taken by NZRL management.
Board chairman Andrew Chalmers, who is with the team, said the NZRL derived no satisfaction from the outcome of the police inquiry and remained disappointed with the players concerned.
"We regret what happened and want to make it clear we don't condone the behaviour that prompted the police investigation. There were clear breaches of team protocols from the players concerned and disciplinary action has been taken accordingly." No names or details would be released.
