New Zealanders leading an anti-piracy fleet in the Gulf of Aden have played a big part in the response to pirates ransacking a merchant ship in the Red Sea.
The 63,000 tonne bulk carrier MV Caravos Horizon attacked by fast boats and was boarded by six armed men as it sailed through the southern Red Sea on Friday, prompting the ship's master and 23 Filipino crew to seek refuge in a secure compartment called a citadel.
The master also reported hearing shots fired.
Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 commander Captain James Gilmour, from the Royal New Zealand Navy, sent the British frigate HMS Monmouth to the aid of the merchant ship, and also the aircraft carrier USS Bataan, which used a helicopter to help.
At the same time, Commander Mat Williams, also from the Royal New Zealand Navy, contacted the carrier's master, keeping him informed of the military response.
