The first shipment of tsunami relief materials left Auckland for Apia on a Royal New Zealand Navy ship yesterday.
Twelve container loads were donated to the Samoa Tsunami 2009 Appeal established by Samoa's consul-general in Auckland, Afioga Faolotoi Reupena Pogi, with Samoan community leaders.
Former All Black Michael Jones, now head coach of the Samoa Rugby Union, said New Zealanders had responded very generously. "We will work with partners in Samoa to ensure the materials reach those who are most in need."
The collection centres in Henderson and Mangere remain open and further shipments are planned.
