Horrified relatives of a 19-year-old New Zealander watched as the teenager was flung 15m into the air when hit by a car while crossing a road in Perth.
Vaughan Tewaihapuarangi Gavigan, who is understood to have moved to Perth a few weeks ago, died on the roadside, after a family gathering at a relative's house.
Inspector Ray Briggs of the Perth police said the teenager, who lived in the suburb of Willetton, had crossed to the median strip on Warton Rd in nearby Huntingdale early on Saturday.
He stepped out to continue crossing, causing a 17-year-old riding his scooter home with his girlfriend as passenger to swerve to avoid him.
Mr Gavigan, who was with some cousins, was then struck by the 33-year-old female motorist travelling directly behind the scooter.
Police did not expect to charge the woman, Mr Briggs said.
The scooter rider, Aaron Johnson, said the woman kept driving for a while. He followed her and convinced her to pull over.
He told the Perth Now website: "I heard a big bang and looked behind me and I saw him go flying over the pedestrian island. He was just walking across the road and the car cleaned him up, but the car took ages to stop.
"I said to the driver, 'You just hit someone' ... I ran back to where he was and I checked for a pulse but there was nothing. His injuries were terrible."
Efforts to revive the teenager were unsuccessful.
