A kiwi hit by a car in the Waitotara Valley, Taranaki, last week is getting a health check-up from Massey University vets.
The dazed bird was picked up by residents and kept overnight until Conservation Department staff could collect him.
Biodiversity programme manager Jim Campbell said injured birds needed help as soon as possible, and he encouraged people to contact the Department of Conservation or Bird Rescue Wanganui without delay.
The kiwi will be returned to the Waitotara Valley.
