Kiwi dies after being hit by train in Western Australia

A New Zealand man is believed to have died after being hit by a cargo train in Western Australia.

Police were yet to formally identify the man, but Fairfax said he was Mailangi Hori Malui Lilo, 28, formerly of Manawatu.

He had been living in Lamington, Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia, and is believed to be the father of two children..

The fatality happened at 1.45am Sunday after the train, travelling northeast, hit the man on the Piccadily St crossing. He died at the scene.

The coroner's office is investigating the death.

A Givealittle page has been set up to help bring his body and his family back to New Zealand.

The person who set up the page spoke of losing a "bro" and wanting to help the family through their tragedy.

"For the people out there that aren't sure on what this is about we have lost a loved one in a devastating accident involving a train.

"I hope everyone is willing to contribute to this page as the bro would have done it for any of us."

So far the page has raised more than $9000.

ABC reported rail freight operator Aurizon was supporting the train drivers involved.
