A New Zealand man died after an alleged assault by staff at a Bali nightclub early on Sunday morning.
It appears the man was with a female companion when he was attacked by five or six people at the Bounty Disco bar in Kuta.
The Herald understands the woman was also struck with a bottle. Kuta police said six men were in custody but would not say whether charges had been laid.
A spokesman for the BIMC Hospital in Kuta, Deddy Suharatawan, told the Herald paramedics were called to the Sari Samudra Bungalows resort, where the man was staying, at about 6.30am on Sunday. He was unconscious and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman Emma Reilly said the New Zealand Embassy was providing support for the man's family.
