Former national senior mountain running champion Glenn Hughes overcame testing conditions to win the open men's title at the Holdsworth Jumbo trail race at Mount Holdsworth on Saturday.
The diminutive Hughes, from Wellington, clocked 2h 40m 59s for the 24km, well outside the race record but still an excellent time considering the blustery winds, which prevailed over the higher points of the run, slowing many of the 90 competitors to a virtual walk at times.
Hughes had more than a minute to spare from James Bradshaw with Julian Davidson close up third.
New Zealand orienteering representative Piriet Klade was first woman home over the 24km course in 3h 16m 8s and her partner, Bryn Davies, won the men's section of the Hooper Loop raced over 12km in 57m 08s despite being troubled by stomach cramps.
A highlight of the Hooper Loop, which attracted 50 starters, was the effort of Carterton's Lucie Greenwood, who won the women's section in a time of 1h 9m 32s, which placed her third overall.
