KEY POINTS:
The parents of the Rotorua toddler who escaped from Selwyn Kindergarten unnoticed are happy with the kindergarten's investigation.
But they won't be sending the 3-year-old back there in a hurry.
A meeting was held between Maia Bidois' parents, Wakaroa Bidois and Adele Gotty, and officials from the Central North Island Kindergarten Association late last week.
Mr Bidois said he was happy with the result.
"It was a good meeting. The kindergarten took full responsibility for the situation and have gone over and above what I thought they would do to fix the problem."
The kindergarten had repaired a problem gate, removed a raised garden that may have been used by children to climb a fence and were remorseful over what happened.
"They have offered to take Maia back but we are still a bit reserved about letting her go," he said.
"But it has taken a weight off our shoulders, I doubt it will happen again, which is all I wanted from the beginning."
The general manager of the Central North Island Kindergarten Association, Jan Ballantyne, said she was happy the situation was settled.
"We are very pleased we were able to come to a positive conclusion.
"If and when the family want her [Maia] to come back we would be delighted to have her."
Mrs Ballantyne said their investigation did not uncover how Maia escaped but she was confident the situation would not repeat itself.
"Our investigation showed nothing was wrong with the gate but the kindergarten have made some improvements to make sure it would never happen again."
Maia was attending her first full day at Selwyn Kindergarten two weeks ago when she disappeared shortly after being dropped off by her mother. She was found about 20 minutes later at her grandmother's house in Mallard Drive about 1km away.
