Makoura College graduand Kimberley Smith was named the top performing academic student at the school this year.
Ms Smith took the NCEA Level 3 academic excellence award at the Year 13 graduation ceremony, after scoring the highest NCEA Level 3 grade point average. She received an offer of an Otago University Dux Scholarship to the value of $5000, a camera from Fuji Xerox and a book prize from the college.
Four graduands were honoured with a Kia Manawanui Award, including Tom Feringa, Zoe Bowater, Aaliyah Rimene and Rheegin Anderson McKenzie, each of whom had consistently shown courage and compassion in their learning and in their relationships with others.
The four students were seen as having achieved at an outstanding level in one or more areas of learning and their involvement at the college was completed according to school values during their time at Makoura.
These values include whaia te tika - seeking to do what is right; whaia te pono - seeking to develop wisdom through learning; and whaia te aroha - seeking to demonstrate concern and support for others.
