The suitcase murder has been a popular topic on local Chinese websites, some writers saying their families back home are concerned for their safety.
One, using the name Fish Face, wrote: "You, evil killer ... I receive calls every day from my home in China, and to persuade me go back to China. I am on the edge of becoming mad."
Several postings on skykiwi.com and 168.co.nz discuss the impact on Chinese students in New Zealand.
"It is the time for those students, who do not want to study, and who think of making big money to be rich, to wake up," says an anonymous message on 168.co.nz.
"You should think about the consequences before you do anything, think about your parents who raised you, think about how your parents support you come to New Zealand to study by starving themselves.
"You should not wag from school and do nothing. The motivation of your parents who only eat cheap pickled vege is not for you to play pool, sing in Karaoke. They want their children to be successful. How can you pay your parents back if you behave like this?"
