Augustine Borrell's killer was often unsupervised by his parents when he offended, despite bail conditions that should have put him under effective house arrest.
Haiden Davis' mother, Lisa Poihegatama, said that on the occasions when he had got in trouble, she had been out of town or working at her customer service job. "But I don't feel I need to justify myself," she said. "There was a list of people to supervise him. It was extended whanau."
The mothers of the victim and his killer clashed verbally at an early court hearing and Borrell's family have declined to meet Lisa .
Augustine's father Charlie said: "She could have shown some remorse but she was defensive of Haiden. She didn't show any sorrow for us, or show any feelings for us of our loss. Ten years goes by quickly, and he will only be 30. We will never see our son again.
"The knife didn't just go through my son's heart. It went through our whole family. It went through mine and I am still hurting almost two years later."
Lisa has not talked to her son about the killing because "I could see that he was hurting".
Haiden lived with his mother in Otara. Lisa said: "There are no manuals for being the perfect mother. But I feel I have done the best to my ability."
"As a family we are really sorry for the Borrell family. We are really truly sorry for Augustine's death." She now fears retribution and for her son's safety in prison.
