Relatives of convicted murderer David Bain have killed his hopes of attending his grandmother's funeral.
A family member yesterday contacted prison staff to say he was not welcome at Friday's funeral of Ethel (Marion) Bain, 95, who died in Otaki on Saturday.
The family member said Bain was not wanted at the funeral, the Dominion Post reported today.
The newspaper said it was understood Bain would have applied for compassionate leave.
Bain was jailed a decade ago for slaying five members of his family in their Dunedin home in 1994.
His lawyer has called for Governor-General Silvia Cartwright to grant an immediate retrial.
The Privy Council in London last month decided to grant him a full hearing after the Court of Appeal in New Zealand refused to grant him a retrial.
