KEY POINTS:
Witnesses have told how young children passed weapons to a suspected Mongrel Mob member after a street brawl spiralled out of control in Auckland on Friday night. Police arrested a resident of Jordan Ave, Onehunga, yesterday after another man needed hospital treatment for leg wounds inflicted by a tomahawk.
Witnesses said the drama began as the arrested man starting yelling abuse at a group of men drinking outside their house as he drove past. One shouted back before approaching the vehicle and punching the man through the open window of his car.
Two independent witnesses said the man, after parking outside his home, came outside brandishing a sawnoff single-barrel shotgun.
"Then ... he started yelling and a couple of young kids came out ... with weapons to hand to him and the gun disappeared."
They said the kids were carrying a double-edged axe, a baseball bat and a cricket bat.
