KEY POINTS:
Kidnapped schoolgirl Xin Xin Ma spent the weekend surrounded by family, painting and playing with toys the police gave her after she was rescued.
The 5-year-old appears to have survived her five-day ordeal - during which she is believed to have been locked in a cupboard - without any serious injury, although it is too early to know if there will be any long-term psychological effects.
Her aunt, Hong Zhou, visited Xin Xin at a hotel on Saturday and said the little girl was doing well and "trying to get back to normal".
Ms Zhou said she appeared to have been fed while held captive, but was dehydrated and had cracked lips when pulled from the cupboard by police.
"She has had some meals, but not enough water.
"But she's doing okay, she is still playing with the kids and is not scared. She doesn't get affected a lot, we feel happy about that."
Xin Xin has been at an undisclosed hotel with her mother, father and younger sister since being released from hospital where she was assessed after being rescued on Friday.
She was found by police in a partially built home in Albany that was only metres away from her home - something her aunt believes has helped the child as she was familiar with the area.
"I think she was quite clever, she knew she was not far away."
Xin Xin's family have confirmed they know of the man who was arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
The 25-year-old real estate agent had sold many of the houses in the subdivision where the family live.
The man, who appeared in the North Shore District Court on Saturday, has been charged with kidnapping Xin Xin with the intent to hold her for ransom.
He was granted interim name suppression, and was remanded in custody until Friday when he is to re-appear in court.
