A Marton man who tied up, gagged and raped a woman he said he loved has been jailed for 10 years.
Danny Wayne, 42, a painter, had been found guilty or pleaded guilty to sexual violation by rape, aggravated burglary, two charges of kidnapping, three of threatening to kill, two of assault with a weapon and two of male assaults female.
Wellington District Court Judge Neville Jaine yesterday imposed a minimum non-parole period of five years, ensuring Wayne serves at least half his sentence.
The victim had told the court that she had never felt so helpless or powerless.
She was receiving counselling and still had nightmares.
Judge Jaine said Wayne had a 25-year history of offending, including a conviction in 1980 for abducting a woman for sex, and another in 1984 for a similar offence.
He also had convictions for aggravated robbery, dishonesty and driving offences.
The judge said Wayne had an obsession with the woman and uncontrolled jealousy.
Wayne had had a tragic upbringing and his offending came from an explosion of rage and feelings of wanting to be dead, said Judge Jaine.
Defence lawyer Robert Lithgow said Wayne was determined not to spend the second half of his life the way he had spent the first half.
