An 18-year-old Tauranga man accused of kidnapping and indecently assaulting a 5-year-old girl has been refused bail despite making renewed pleas to be released for Christmas.
The defendant, whose identity is suppressed, pleaded with the judge during his third appearance at the Tauranga District Court yesterday.
"Please, your honour, I just want to spend Christmas with my family," he said.
The defendant said he would do whatever it took, including abiding by a 24-hour curfew.
Judge Thomas Ingram denied the request for bail and remanded him in custody for a predepositions hearing on January 16.
The defendant faces one charge of abduction and three of indecent assault after he allegedly kidnapped the girl on her way to school, drove her to an isolated spot and assaulted her.
In his first court appearance a week ago, he pleaded with the community magistrate overseeing the proceedings to grant him bail.
"Please, your honour, it's Christmas," he said. "I don't want to spend Christmas without my family."
His remark provoked an angry reaction from the girl's stepfather, who said, "A little girl's Christmas has been spoiled too, mate."
Security was tight yesterday after the outbursts a week ago and at a second appearance on Tuesday. The girl's mother was in court for each of the appearances.
