Car thieves are preying on motorists who leave the keys in the ignition at petrol stations and other "quick-stop" locations, says the Insurance Council.
Council chief executive Chris Ryan says 35,000 cars were stolen last year and many more interfered with.
Mr Ryan says holidaying motorists should never leave the keys in the ignition - even for a minute.
The council also advises motorists to:
* Park in a well-lit area.
* Don't hide spare keys or keys to mag-wheel locks in the vehicle.
* Avoid leaving valuables in the car - thieves will do all sorts of damage to get at them.
* Don't leave spare keys in the home - burglars can use the family vehicle to take away the stolen goods.
