National leader John Key says a poll putting him ahead of Helen Clark as preferred prime minister shows voters are unimpressed with personal-attack politics.
Mr Key rose one point in the TV3/TNS poll to 32 per cent approval. Helen Clark was down 3 points to 28. "I think what it shows very clearly is that when politicians indulge themselves in unjustified personal attacks they will be marked down very heavily by the public," Mr Key said.
National was down 1 point at 47 per cent in the poll, but that was 10 points ahead of Labour, which gained 1 point. Translated into seats in Parliament, National would have 60 and Labour 47.
The Greens were on 7 per cent, New Zealand First 3.2, the Maori Party 1.8, Act 1.5 per cent and United Future 0.1.
