Australian cricket vice-captain Michael Clarke was a no-show at a reception held at Parliament yesterday, which did not surprise Prime Minister John Key.
"We host these functions all the time, whether it's for the All Blacks or the Black Caps and touring teams. You always get some of the players turn up, but not always."
Who decided to come was a matter for the Australians, he said.
Clarke cut short his involvement in the One Day International series against New Zealand, flying home last Monday to sort out his relationship with fiancee, Lara Bingle.
However, their engagement is over.
Earlier, Mr Key said he supported the Black Caps' decision not to tour Zimbabwe in June. The primary concern is the collapse of Zimbabwe's health system and the generally unstable environment in that country.
Mr Key said his main concern was safety and security.
