The Carterton District Council have been slammed for not enhancing changing room facilities at Howard Booth Park.
Wairarapa United soccer stalwart Phil Keinzley says that with politicking for the local body elections now in fill swing it was timely for this "unsatisfactory situation" to be raised.
Keinzley said that with three soccer fields Howard Booth Park had the potential to become the flagship of the sport in the whole of the Wairarapa.
But, unfortunately, it contained just the two changing rooms which basically meant that tournaments could not be played there.
"There's scope for probably at least four more changing rooms and that's what the council should be looking to provide," Keinzley said. "Do that and the tournaments will come, nothing is surer than that."
Keinzley said the current problems with the changing facilities at Howard Booth Park were, in fact, the main reason behind Wairarapa United moving their headquarters from Carterton to Masterton.
"We had no hassles at all with the support we were getting from the Carterton club & it was the facilities which were the hassle," he said.
But the changing rooms are not the only source of concern for Keinzley at Howard Booth Park, he also believes the upkeep of the grounds there could be improved.
"In all honesty they could be labelled the worst grounds in Wairarapa when it comes to providing a level surface," he said. "Often the grass is too long and the ball bounces all over the place, that's something which need to be rectified as well."
Keinzley is hopeful that council candidates in Carterton will be prompted by his criticisms to have a look for themselves at Howard Booth Park with the idea of promoting better amenities there.
"It should be an election issue, it's the sort of thing which could help boost Carterton's profile," he said.
