Wairarapa United are looking to turn back the clock.
The region's premier football club is aiming to form a women's side which would contest next season's Capital second division competition and is seeking interest from players keen to be involved.
Fielding a women's team would be nothing new for Wairarapa United.
They were a force to be reckoned with at the very top levels through the late 1990s and early 2000s, being runners-up in the national women's knockout competition in both 1999 and 2000 and winning the Wellington premier women's league title in 2001.
Players like White Ferns Wendi Henderson, Nicky Smith and Michele Clarke (nee Keinzley) were virtually household names then.
For Phil Keinzley, who was coach of the women's team back then and nowadays has charge of Wairarapa United's Central League men's side, returning to those halcyon days is an ambition he knows won't be easily achieved.
But at the same time Keinzley is heartened by the number of talented young females playing the game locally and believes there is the makings of a "very competitive" side with the one important proviso - the players had to be prepared to work hard on their fitness and skills levels to ensure their potential was fully realised.
"What we are saying is that we are not interested in players who only want to play socially," Keinzley said.
"We want to be competitive from the word go and that will only happen if the hard yards are done."
Given a women's team is formed, their first objective would be to earn the right to participate in the mid-season promotion-relegation match between the top Capital second division side and the bottom of first division. Win that and the next priority would be to take out the first division championship and qualify to play in central league.
"You can move through the grades quite quickly and that would obviously be the aim for us.
"The higher the level you play the more chance there is for players to make national sides."
