Their 2-0 loss to Western Suburbs at Howard Booth Park, Carterton on Saturday has left Andersons Meats Wairarapa United battling to hold down third place in Capital Soccer's premier division competition.
They are now just four points ahead of Western Suburbs and Waterside-Karori in the race for that position-which could mean promotion to a revamped central league series in 2007-and there are still three games to go.
The fact they are playing lowly-ranked Upper Hutt in Upper Hutt next weekend should be to Wairarapa United's advantage but coach Phil Keinzley is the first to admit that a tendancy to play well but not win in recent games is becoming a concern.
"We seem to be going through a patch where the results just won't go our way and when that happens you take nothing for granted,' he said.
Keinzley was more than happy with Wairarapa United's performance in their latest encounter against Western Suburbs, a team which they have yet to beat in Capital competition play.
But so strong was the Western Suburbs defence that the majority of their shots at goal were taken from a long way out, all without success.
"We had plenty of shots on goal but hardly any from close range," he said. "They were very tight on defence and we couldn't break them up there."
Western Suburbs, on the other hand, had very few shots at goal and managed to score from two of them, one of these from the penalty spot midway through the second half after Wairarapa United keeper Tony Jamieson had been sent from the field.
"Our own defence was good overall but the two goals could have been avoided,"Keinzley said.. "We were our own worst enemeies in that respect."
Outstanding for Wairarapa United was Guiseppe Cagliari who produced one of the team's best individual efforts of the season. He made a mountain of tackles on defence and his workrate was remarkable.
Also standing out on defence was Petero Dauniseka while Pita Rabo and Lai Gataurua were the pick of the attack.
