Summer will be here before we know it, so it's time to check out your car's cooling system. Proper maintenance will protect your engine from heat and ensure it is working efficiently.
* Check the coolant level whenever you change the oil - at least once every other fuel fill.
* Keep the radiator clean. To keep it corrosion-free and cooling well, use a garden hose and soft brush to remove bugs, dirt and debris from crevices in its front.
* Look at the hoses, too. When the engine is cold, squeeze the top and bottom hoses. If they feel brittle or hard, replace them.
* Check drive belts. Look for frayed edges, cracks, or a faded appearance, all signs it needs replacing. Get any loose, squealing belts tightened.
* Check engine oil. In hot weather your car may use more oil than usual.
* Flush the radiator. Keeping the cooling system fresh and clean helps prevent corrosion and assures your coolant has the proper boiling point and protection.
