North Islanders had better get their raincoats out because it looks like a wet week ahead.
Weather Watch head forecaster Phillip Duncan said a big low pressure system over the North Island was not especially aggressive, but it was large.
"We're probably going to have three days of unsettled weather but it will probably take until next Wednesday to clear. That's why we're calling it the seven-day low, because it's going to hang round a bit."
Mr Duncan said heavy falls were possible in Auckland, Northland and Waikato.
Once the low was gone, a high from the Tasman Sea would take over and bring more settled weather to the North Island and it would be the South Island's turn for rain.
MetService weather forecaster Chris Noble said the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges would get the worst of the rain early today.
Severe weather warnings for Northland and the central North Island were expected to have been lifted last night.
Mr Noble said once those warnings were lifted there were no more significant weather events, but the weather would be "changeable", with the expectation that most parts of the country would get rain or showers over the next few days.
He said it would be a few days at least before the country could expect an extended period of settled weather.
