Two kayakers were not wearing life jackets when they were rescued from the Tukituki River in Hawkes Bay today.
A man and his young daughter were paddling in a double kayak, near the mouth of the river around lunchtime when their kayak tipped and they were swept towards the sea, Newstalk ZB reported.
Napier police acting senior sergeant Mike Stevenson said neither the man nor his daughter were wearing life jackets.
