Four kayakers rescued from Lake Rotorua in terrible weather conditions had a lucky escape - with the head of Coastguard Rotorua saying the outcome could easily have been worse.
The group was rescued from Lake Rotorua while attempting a trip despite weather warnings.
Coastguard Rotorua were called out at 10.30am on Sunday morning to find the group, believed to be two locals and two tourists, who had tried to kayak to Mokoia Island from Ngongotaha.
Coastguard Rotorua president Barry Grouby, who was involved with the rescue, said that in his opinion it was "crazy" to be doing this considering the weather conditions.
"It easily could have been a different outcome. We could have been retrieving a body for sure. It was bad out there."
