A group of kayakers have been rescued from Taranaki surf after one of them capsized and injured his shoulder.
Police were called to Opunake Beach, southwest of New Plymouth, at 3pm after reports a male kayaker was in trouble in the water.
Three other kayakers went to assist during which time another person capsized, a police spokeswoman said.
That kayaker was able to get back on board but surf lifeguards on an inflatable rescue boat had to rescue the first kayaker who suffered a discloated shoulder.
The group of other kayakers, who were about 300m offshore, struggled to get back in but were eventually helped back by the lifeguards.
