Kayaker rescued

A 20-year-old kayaker spent five hours drifting in the sea after being tipped from his kayak near Orewa yesterday. Orewa Surf Life Saving Patrol Captain Faron Turner said lifeguards spotted the man splashing far out at sea and rescued him at 4.30pm.

The man had been fishing but was tipped out of his kayak by a gust of wind. Turner said the fact he was wearing a lifejacket had saved his life.
