A kayaker, aged in his 40s, had to be rescued by the Hawke's Bay Coastguard today after being blown 1500 metres out to sea.
The man was setting a net at Clive River mouth when he got into trouble.
As he was swept further from shore by a strong current, he yelled for help from fishermen on the beach, who alerted police.
Forty minutes after his plight began, the Coastguard arrived to find the man still sitting in his sea kayak unharmed. He did not require medical attention.
The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter was also called, but was not required.
