Kayaker rescued after tipping out off Plimmerton, Wellington

A kayaker who was in trouble near Wellington has been successfully rescued.

Police received a call at 11.52am of a kayak upside down and a man in the water off Plimmerton.

Officers were told the kayaker was about 1km offshore in choppy waters.

The Westpac helicopter has just reached the man, and paramedics are working on him.

Police said the man was rescued by boat and is being taken back to the local marina at Mana.

He will be assessed once on shore by paramedics.

The Westpac Rescue helicopter has been stood down.
