Firefighters are continuing to monitor a large scrub fire near Clevedon, on the southeastern outskirts of Auckland.
The blaze, which started on scrub land in Kawakawa Bay about 7.30pm yesterday, last night forced the evacuation of several homes in the area as smoke spread over the area.
A team of more than 50 firefighters brought the fire under control by 11.30pm and residents were able to return to their homes.
Firefighters monitored the blaze overnight, and two fire appliances remained at the scene today.
The situation was to be reevaluated later this morning.
