Michael Tavares has entered a guilty plea in the Waitakere District Court for wilful trespass.
He spent three days up a kauri tree in Titirangi in April, to stop it from being chopped down.
The tree, which is on private property, still stands.
He was ordered to reappear in the court later today to discuss a process of restorative justice.
