A Masterton man who has officiated at many public functions has now joined Masterton District Council's senior management team.
Kaumatua Mike Kawana will work part-time in an advisory role and by helping out at functions such as citizenship ceremonies and tangi.
Chief executive Pim Borren said Mr Kawana's appointment will further the council's objective to partner more closely with Maori and will introduce a strong Maori voice at a senior level within Masterton District Council.
Mr Borren said the senior management team structure, which is a new initiative, was "bedding in well" and would allow more opportunity for efficient decision making through clearer delegation.
The team held a strategic planning day late last month.
