A state highway is set to reopen after it closed partially this afternoon after a car hit a rockfall just out of Waihi.
A police spokeswoman said it looked like rocks had fallen onto the SH2 at Karangahake Gorge and a car had crashed into them around 2.45pm. She said there were no obvious injuries and the driver was not trapped.
The car was towed from the scene and the rockfall was cleared from the road.
The eastbound lane was blocked earlier and traffic built up. The spokeswoman said then that traffic would be managed rather than a diversion put in place.
Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said this afternoon that the road was blocked by the incident and traffic was "quite seriously" blocking up.
