KEY POINTS:
David Bain's staunchest defender flew out of Dunedin yesterday confident he had at least 10 more witnesses for the defence.
Joe Karam arrived in the city last Wednesday to interview prospective witnesses and take statements for the defence in the Bain retrial.
He flew out yesterday morning with information and statements from "between 10 and 25" people that he would present to Bain's legal team in Auckland.
While he would not reveal exactly how many people he had interviewed, he had gathered "certainly at least 10" new witnesses for the defence, he said.
Although he had some interviews organised before he went south, he had also had a good response to advertisements and news reports while he was in the city, he said.
"I had quite a lot of calls from unexpected and interesting people."
Some said they had offered police their information during the original investigation and were told it was not required, Mr Karam said.
He intended to return to Dunedin again but was not sure when.
Bain will be retried after the Privy Council quashed five murder convictions against him for the deaths of his parents, two sisters and brother in their Dunedin home in 1994.
The new trial is set down to begin on May 5, 2008.
