Karam defamation case set for later this year

A defamation case by David Bain advocate Joe Karam against two Justice for Robin Bain members has been set for later this year.

Kent Parker, of Justice for Robin Bain (JFRB), said the case against himself and fellow member Victor Purkiss will be heard before a judge at the Auckland High Court on October 14.

The pair planned to defend themselves in the case.

The case consists of four actions. Mr Parker being publisher of other people's comments, Mr Parker being creator of the website, Mr Parker for his comments on a Facebook page and on his website, and Mr Purkiss for comments on the Facebook page, on his website and TradeMe messageboards.

Mr Parker declined to talk about the matter yesterday other than to say "we have a substantial defence and we are using truth as our main defence".

The pair maintained the defamation suit was improper and vexatious and would present substantial evidence before the court.

Mr Karam told the Otago Daily Times last night "I have been very seriously defamed by Mr Parker and Mr Purkiss, and the matter is going to court later this year".

The legal action involves about 100 comments allegedly published by Messrs Parker and Purkiss.
