Kaitaia family's pain over baby's driveway death

The grieving family of a 13-month-old Kaitaia boy fatally run over in a driveway on Friday have told of their pain.

Speaking from a funeral home yesterday, a spokesman for the family said: "It's a terrible tragedy and we wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else."

Paramedics were unable to revive the child after the accident outside his Jamieson Rd home about 5.30pm.

Police were investigating.

Friday's tragedy was the second driveway fatality this year. On January 24, David Taliai, 3, was killed when he was hit on a driveway in Manurewa, alongside a block of shops.

A Safekids campaign was launched last November in a bid to reduce death and injury to children, usually toddlers, on driveways.

The funeral for the boy, whose name has not yet been released, will be held this week.
