A $5000 cheque has been handed to Kahutara School to help put lime on their BMX track after the school won the nationwide Powering Your Community competition.
Tru-Test area sales manager Annissa Humphrey handed over the first prize from her company, which ran the competition, to Kahutara Parents and Citizens (KPC) group member Lynnette Cherry, who entered the school in the contest, and her partner Shane Hislop, who was overseeing the construction of the competition-grade track.
Deputy principal Charmaine Taplin welcomed the company representatives and KPC chairwoman Jo Woodcock thanked Ms Cherry for making the entry and Mr Hislop for the work on the BMX course, which is set to become the only competition-grade track in Wairarapa.
A group of students, with parents' help, had established the track in 2008, while a stand of macrocarpa trees had been since felled for safety. Parents had also donated machinery, labour and time to improve and extend the track to about 300m, which is competition length.
Ms Cherry entered the school in the annual Stafix Powering Your Community nationwide contest that offered cash prizes of $5000, $3000, and $2000 to the three top-placed schools of 10 finalists, with the winners decided by an online public vote.
