A relative of murdered twins Chris and Cru Kahui has been jailed after he distributed flyers offering drugs for sale.
David William Kahui, 44, was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for possession of cannabis for purpose of sale. His partner Jackie Walker said he was the second cousin of the grandfather of the twins.
Walker and Kahui went to the funeral of the Kahui twins, Chris and Cru, in June.
The Crown prosecutor said David Kahui ran a sophisticated and profitable operation, described as "dial-a-tinny". Kahui distributed flyers advertising his product with contact details and delivery areas, inviting calls and text message orders.
He hired a network of courier drivers, paid $500 a week, to deliver the "tinnies". The drivers were all contactable by cellphones provided by Kahui.
Earlier this year, police simultaneously raided Kahui's house and the house of Walker, in Mangere. They found 592g of cannabis and $6000 in cash and log books recording sales, deliveries and mileage. The raid also netted a radio scanner used to monitor police movements and a computer spreadsheet detailing sales and profits.
Kahui's criminal record was described as "chequered" but mainly consisted of traffic offences.
Despite his conviction, Kahui told the probation officer he never took drugs and disapproved of drug-taking.
David is not the only Kahui to run foul of the law since the twins' case was made public. This latest Kahui revelation follows the lifting of name suppression of Roger Kahui, 36, a cousin of the grandfather of the murdered twins, charged with rape and abduction in Pukekohe on June 13.
